Procrastination does not come to your door wearing a cheap suit. He is a savvy salesman. After all, he is your friend! He believes the best in you. He wines and dines you on caviar promises of all you can do and all you can be ... tomorrow! Because tomorrow is his favorite word.
- "You can start that paper tomorrow."
- "Why make that call today, when you can do it first thing tomorrow."
- "Clean the garage? Of course! Tomorrow would be the perfect time."
That word rolls off his tongue with ease and finesse. He says it so smoothly. His tone is captivating--even comforting! His offer seems so good. "And the best part of all," he tells you, "It won't cost you a thing."
HE IS A LIAR! He's a pied piper directing a procession of losers. He may promise prosperity, but he will deliver poverty. That is why God says,
How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest--and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man. (Proverbs 6:9-11 NIV)
Procrastination is a peddler of empty promises so don't purchase his product. It will bankrupt you! You'll pay and you'll lose. You will pay with a guilty conscience, a diminished self-esteem, and stunted potential. And you will lose . . . opportunities, relationships, the competitive edge, and irrecoverable ticks of the clock. Check the returns on his portfolio, they point in only one direction - down!
No matter how smooth he talks or how much he promises, he is an enemy not an ally. But you can defeat him. One little word will get him out of your face, off your front porch, and out of your life. You don't have to shout the word. Whispering it will do just fine. The word? TODAY!
