There is nothing like feeling bad to make one appreciate feeling good. At this present moment I am sick. Perhaps that explains in part why Moments, a short video by Everynone posted on Culture Making, grabbed my heart. In the words of Andy Crouch it is, "A visual exploration of the moments that define our lives, suffused with grief, gratitude, and wonder. Wow." The video is four minutes including credits. You won't be disappointed. When you finish consider the thoughts below.
Watching this video reminded me of Eugene Peterson's paraphrase of John 1:14 and of Jesus' words in Matthew 28:18-20.
The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son, generous inside and out, true from start to finish. (John 1:14 The Message)
And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20 ESV)
When Jesus moved into the neighborhood he entered into our moments. The commission he gave us is a reminder that it is in these moments that the gospel travels. Go therefore and make disciples is literally "as you are going make disciples." The person and message of Jesus is for every moment, not just Sundays. Enjoy the moments.
My prayer: Lord, give me eyes to see the moments.
